“Are You Honest?”
Director: Emily Twines
Cast: Connor Sheridan, Emily Caffery, Javon Minter
In this study on gender relations in Shakespeare’s Hamlet done for an independent study course at Brooklyn College, I isolated scenes between the titular character and Ophelia. Halfway through their performance, Emily (playing at the time Ophelia) dropped a rose down-stage-center, and Connor (playing Hamlet) picket it up. At that moment, the actors switched characters, so that Connor took up Ophelia’s lines and Emily, Hamlet’s. They played out the rest of the pair’s interactions in these inverted roles, highlighting the performativity of gender and undermining the patriarchal impositions of the final “madness” scenes.
Performed November 2015 in the Brooklyn College Performance and Interactive Media Arts Classroom.
